your hesitation

how you gobble your words,
eating them up as though
they were bile or food meant
to be chewed, and digested,
and carried forever in the belly,
not spat out.
the hesitation, how it robs you
of the carefreeness of childhood
when a million vairables
weren’t pulling your hair in a
million other directions,
but now they cause you
to mull and mull over and remull,
rethink, overthink.
overthink.
there is so much to ponder about,
to ensure you aren’t falling
into unseen depths or signing up
for things that may stab a spike
through your back or saying words
that will hang on you on a crucifix.
words.
simple words, you refuse to say.
how you defend them with silence,
with a gulping constriction in your
throat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
how much?
how many more times?
oh, the burden of knowledge.
a burden indeed.
