Fukrey Returns Review

I recently watched Fukrey Returns.

This film exceeded the measly expectations I had for it.

The amount of work the makers put in the plot is evident. I really like the nuanced character of Choocha and the revelations revolving around him that were made in the film. What really caught my eye was the honesty the film exhibited, about the Indian society and several realities we shy away from. That is what I like about fiction, the fact that nothing is off limits. The comedy was on point, and several dialogues really made the audience cackle. Particularly, I remember the ‘dayan story’ narrated with comedic expertise by Choocha that set everybody around me chuckling. I like the contradictions in Bholi’s character. However, her last scene (I shan’t indulge in spoiling) felt really off.

One of the highlights of this film for me was the scene where Choocha thinks that the politician Babulal Bhatia is Chacha Nehru. That really showed the double standards and hypocrisy of politicians and how they craft an inverse image of themselves in public (many of them anyway).

However, the main love interests were flat and boring. No love subplot felt real (a common problem in Bollywood).

On the whole, a frivolous-seeming film provided good entertainment and a brain-tickling plot, such that I wish more Bollywood films were like this one.
